In Reply to: Thank you for the easy to follow directions. I couldn't have done it with out them. My next question is... posted by The guy always asking your paladin to summon him out of the Spider Web. (FizZle) on September 11, 2000 at 09:06:12:

This post assumes you're using Windows.

Ekirhal just mentioned my "method" a post down, but instead of just finding my post from awhile ago I'll just retype it... :-D

There are two different methods... one is harder than the other, but for some is may be easier. I'll post both.

When Using A Program Other than NOTEPAD

Step 1: If you're using MS Word or something, go ahead and write out your description or role.

Step 2: When you're completely done, head up to File -> Save As and be sure to switch the File Type to Text File, or Text Only. If it gives you an option, pick Unformatted.

Step 3: You need to "check" it in notepad anyway... so click on Start -> Run and then type "notepad" in that field, then click Okay.

Step 4: Now you're in notepad, click File -> Open, and find your file... highlight it... then click open.

Step 5: There's a problem with using other word processors... when you save it as text-only, unformatted, it gets rid of the line breaks... meaning it'll all be on one line. If you look at the bottom of your notepad box, you'll see a horizontal scroll bar, egging you on to continue to the right. Here's how you "fix" it...

Step 6: Hit enter and get a clean line at the top of the notepad box. Type 12345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890 ... or paste that into the top line. Why did I just do that? Well, that's 80 characters. What you want to do now is hit enter a few times, leaving more empty space in between your actual description/role you just wrote and the #s garbage you just typed.

Step 7: Hit the spacebar on the fresh lines until you get to about character 75 or so. It's your choice. Pick something between 70-79. Then, put a | underneath it. Go to the next line, do the same. And one more time.

Step 8: Go up to the first line and delete the entire number line thing. See the | 's on the side? That acts as a margin.

Step 9: Go to your description, and use your right arrow to go over to where the last complete word is, not going over the margin. Go to the end of that word and bang enter. You'll have one full line, before the margin, and then the rest of it on the next line... of to the right in the distance somewhere.

Step 10: Repeat Step 9 as you see fit, until all of it is not over the margin at all.

Step 11: Get rid of the | 's and everything, and be sure that only your Description exists. Save it. I usually save it as C:\CF\CharName\Desc.Txt or Role.txt... Up to you.

Step 12: Descriptions or Role.
12a) Go to the first line and type "descrip " (leaving a space in between descrip and the first word)... then go to the second line and put "descrip + "... repeat as is necessary.
12b) If it's a role, use the same process as 12a, just substitute "role" instead of "descrip"...

Step 13: File->Save.

Step 14: Load up ZOC, connect to CF and Login. Then click on Transfer -> ASCII Send. Find your file and double click it... You'll see it throwing it onto the screen.

That'll do it for that section.

When Using NOTEPAD

Step 1: On the first line type... 12345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890 ... or paste it. Why? Because, that's 80 characters. What you want to do is hit enter a few times... each time you hit enter, spacebar over to somewhere between 70-79 characters and put a | character. Do it at least three times. This creates a sort of "margin" for you to follow.

Step 2: Write your description or role, making sure not to go over the margin. Remember, though, if you leave yourself some slack, that on CF when you upload it you can go up to 79 characters without it looking funny... So if you pick 75 characters as your guide, and one or two words go over a character or so, no biggie.

Step 3: After you write your description or role it's very easy to make it uploadable in ZOC.
3a)) Go to the first line and type "descrip " (leaving a space in between descrip and the first word)... then go to the second line and put "descrip + "... repeat until all the lines, other than the first, have "descrip + " in front.
3b) If it's a role, use the same process as 3a, just substitute "role" instead of "descrip"...

Step 4: File->Save As... I usually save it as C:\CF\CharName\descrip.txt or role1.txt.

Step 5: Load up ZOC, connect to CF and Login. Then click on Transfer -> ASCII Send. Find your file and double click it... You'll see it throwing it onto the screen.

That's it... Any questions?
