To be honest, when reading applications, I read those who catch my eyes, an original one will sure get me to read it all and remember you.
a bad formatted one will not have my full attention ( doesn't mean I will not talk to you but it may take longer)
It doesn't have to be long but should contain :

1) who you are
2) why you want to join
3) why we should accept you

but all in all try to be brief. Cabal leader usually get busy really fast ( with applicants talking to them, other cabal raiding, internal cabal talk,) so if they need to take 30 minutes reading your application, they might not read it at all.
