do a forum search this has been discussed at length previously. dwarves in my own experience cant use polearms to save themselves. hand to hand is practicly the default second spec cos their strength is crappy enough that they will end up using hands alot. I tried once shortly after specs were introduced to make a polearm spec he sucked bad. A friend did a dwarf axe at the same time he sucked too.. almost as bad (but thats probably the spec I would choose if I HAD to play a dwarf warrior - 2nd spec hth) also now with conjies having water elementals as a default (nearly everyone uses them cos water is probably the most common vuln exploit), expect to get hurt if you are going to fight them. hope thats of some help.
common 2 chosen specs are mace and axe - neither work exceptionatly well. Though there have been cases of people using either with some success.
