At least some stick around these days. Doing a 180 seems like the best way to do things to me, though I have no first hand experience having only played a few Imperials and not one becoming anathema. Survival is based on who your friends are so becoming a lightwalker is probably your best chance at not getting your ass beat. That or you can sit in the Inn all the time.
