Given that you can learn more through failure than through success with skills, knowing one way or the other in this case allows for a more reasonable 'estimated time of mastery' (or at least the Player's expectations on the matter). MHO.

I don't have the answer to the original question. My guess is that if you never ever learn from your mistakes with shapeshifting, then no. You might ask an animal within the game.
