A human ranger will be the simplest to play at first.

I would not say its the strongest at hero, but humans
tend to do reasonably well. I think you'll get a nice
mix between the effectiveness of bearcharge and backrake.

That said, felars and cloud giants do have some very
nice advantages. A felar with a staff is rather nice,
and the fact that a felar ranger has prot heat mitigates
(at least to some degree) the felar fire vuln. You'll find
felar rangers have alot of health and can be hard to hit.
But they are disarmed too easily.

Clouds I have not played, but they are known to hit VERY hard -
but personally I wonder about their mental vuln and poison
vuln being problematic (can anyone confirm?)

I have not played an elf ranger, nor a half-elf ranger.

Now, far mor important than you race is HOW you play the ranger.
You absolutely must stay in the wild areas, or your
fighting (and I suppose other) skills will suffer. Once you get
you camo skill well learned (i.e. near perfection) you
will see that you can camo with much less of a lag - staying
in cities makes this benefit disappear.

Rangers are pretty strong chars, as long as you stay
in the woods. Remember to use control weather and call
lightning to your advantage. Always entangle at least once,
and always try to use an axe.
