Well Tolkien was the first Fantasy I read that got me hooked at 10 or so years old (The Hobbit) so I have to give him the nod.

As backup? Hmmm .... most of the old boys I read are still with us .... Piers Anthony I guess. The Xanth series is full of light fantasy, and always entertaining .. just finished Harpy Thyme about 2 hours ago.
