If played by a mediocre to decent player, a healer can effectively be a tank where the only problem will lack of repops. And not imminent mana problems problematic conjurations and big poofs and shuffling feet when the mofo gets a luminous, whne he said he always gets transplendants.

Just drag a 2 fire AP's out for dinner with your lithe drow healer and watch some action.

The fact that you can practice weapons/hand to hand on hero xp mobs, without problems and basically 24x7 availabilty ;) and you even have to throw in a heal or two at the mortorn shoppies to keep them alive shows something about sustainability.

Milage may wary, but a good healer is WAY better than most other classes for a great many things. Including ranking, though it might be a bit weak for the ultimate powerrank combo. But it's not many classes that you drag along for ranking, and you basically laugh when the rager gang shows up to slice the scalp and a nifty poncho.
Transplendants are nice, but it's a weakass healer, with a total lack of understanding when a rejuv is the key to survival or was it a bless or fly?
