PacBell, from all reports I have heard, is an absolutely horrid DSL provider. I use Covad (among the leaders in any measure among US DSL providers), and Covad will recommend an ISP from their approved list based on where you live and all that. Since it was set up, I have had precisely zero problems, and I share the DSL with another person. Lightning fast, zero maintainance, and priced the same as their competition.

(Of course, DSL performance depends on how close you live to their switching station. Living in the heart of Silicon Valley has its advantages here. My apartment is one mile from a backbone line. Scary fast.)
