First of all, always treat everyone in (PK)-range as enemies so keep in mind what they might be doing and if you see one in your area respond immediatly. Either go attack them or flee, but don't stop to see how it plays out or think about what your character would do, run/attack first THEN think. Secondly, when fighting don't focus on keeping the enemy from fleeing too much. Focus on winning the fight, and once that is accomplished THEN you can focus on keeping them from fleeing (turning a "made them flee" into a "get all corpse" victory). Thirdly, never think "damn, I forgot a return potion but what the hell I'll attack these two anyway". Prepare properly, and if you've forgotten something abort mission.
