I think the whole point is that this forest is NOT NEARLY as fast as a road. It's something you only take when forced to (or as a sylvan who can't stand civilization or some such). As that, it does it's job perfectly. It's slower, but also much more out of the way. A 'bandit's trail' or whatever.
