If a fire giant ap ONLY had fiend on him, I can easily see him not dying. Especially if he's very smart, but even if he's sub-elite yet skilled.

If the fire giant was sung up to be burdened, and have when you don't see me, and was already weak, well, then yes, he probably should've died.

There are a lot of items out there to help a fire giant turn their big weakness into a resistance, and to help a fire giant take next to no damage from a fiend. Further, antipaladins get one of the best spells there is to destroy a fiend.
