For those of you who don’t want to read all of my rambling, here’s a quick summary. IMHO – superior roles = superior roleplay = greater character interest = greater likelihood of sticking around at hero levels and learning the fine points of rp There's a reason why you don't recognize the name of this character...she hasn't played a single second. Sure I rolled her up, but then I was thinking about it “Why does everyone think of Istendil as the pinnacle of character achievement in CF?” It’s a combination of the above, but what ties it all together is the history. I spend 35 minutes on the train to NYC (go Yanks!) and back every day and for three of those days I was engrossed by Isty’s story which I printed out so I wouldn’t get fired for reading it at my desk. The story was absolutely without a doubt interesting. What makes a someone an elite player? The ability to know what to do in any situation. Why doesn’t anyone have that ability anymore? Because people don’t stick around to learn the little nuances. As someone made a point already, there is a rampage of character deletions going on because it’s no longer about the characters, it’s about the race/class. “Hmm, now I know what a elven tranny is. Let’s see what a felar assassin can do…” Do you think Zors would be the PKer he is if he’d killed character #1 the second he hit level 51? So here it is, the official advice on how to both make CF a better experience for you and to ensure a growing base of elite players… Make REAL characters. Enough of the “Magic killed mommy, thus I’m a rager” roles. Flesh it out. Create a personality not based on what you decide to do that night with fifth of sweet sweet Captain Morgan in you (easy Ekirhal…), but instead, based on the history that makes your character what they are. Sure there’s room to adjust and grow, but you’d be amazed how much you care about a character once you’ve taken several hours (or ideally days to weeks) perfecting a role. Don’t think “what role will get me into Sylvan.” Think, “what role someone want to willingly read in their spare time.” If you haven’t already, go to the archive and print out the Istendil story. Read it, learn it, live it, love it. And then sit down and unleash the writer within you. Trust me, if you’re a CFer you’ve probably read enough fantasy to be able to craft a great story in your sleep. So, you will see Aurilia in the future, but no until there’s a role attached to her that is worthy of a few train rides home.
PK ability? – perhaps, but I think you could make a case for Zors or a dozen others who have (or had) serious PK chops
Role Playing? – probably, but I’ll be honest. I never interacted with Ist as I was away from CF for that time period.
