Well... it depends. Some things to consider are:

#1) Enhanced damage:
Enhanced Damage does extra damage based on the average of the weapon, and is completely unrelated to your damroll. So, an average 20 weapon might generally do 30+ points of damage per hit, without taking any +dam gear into consideration. Classes without enhanced damage are usually better off not worrying too much about +dam gear anyway, instead concentrating on other stats.

#2) The weapon level:
Using a weapon that is higher level than the wielder will result in less damage. For example, if you are level 20, and using a dagger of death (I believe a level 50 average 20 weapon), you are getting majorly screwed. This is why you see alot of mid-ranks running around with practice weapons still, the level on them is so low you do full damage. Damroll isn't affected by level, however.

#3) Resists/vulnerabilities:
When attacking a class with racial vulnerabilities/resists, the weapon used is the factor in determing how hurt they get. For example, if you are attacking zombies, you may be better off using an average 17 weapon if it is holy and/or silver, than a normal avg 25 weapon. Note that in the cases of undead, vulns stack, so a holy _and_ silver weapon does much much more damage. I won't display all the possibly scenarios here, but this should give you an idea.

Resists work the same way. Attacking a fire giant with an average 30 flaming weapon can result doing much less damage than using, say, an average 22 poisonous bite weapon.

So, your best bet is probably to have a variety of weapons onhand. I remember when I played my last warrior, I kept around 7 weapons in my inventory, ready for just about any situation with acidic bite, poisonous bite, shocking bite, smashing, slashing, holy, and mithril/iron. You're just begging to get blackjacked though.
