I've had a friend go spear/staff. He was okay but it still doesn't quite compare to a felar staff/spear. Whips and flails really don't have to be that powerful, because you use them to choke and strip and then you switch to your main weapon. I think an interesting arial spec would be mace, dagger, and polearm would even be cool.
