Two comments: 2) Keys disappear upon logoff because if they didn't, there are a number of locked chests which would have people continually looting their contents every 3 minutes and quitting out/dropping link, using a script to either get terribly wealthy or stocking up on wands/scrolls/etc. Probably not the answer you wanted, but it should show that there is indeed a reason for keys to disappear when you logout.
1) (I know you weren't the one who made the maus comment, but I don't feel like making a seperate post for it). The Maus has other keys scattered around inside, so a crash there rarely means you are trapped inside. Whether or not you reconnect with a room full of aggressive undead is another matter.
