... the rise of roleplaying. But then again, we define "elite" differently. Sure, I'd throw you in there, but I certainly don't consider, say, Arolin among the game's elites. Why? He's only good at one facet. And he had a lot of help getting there. And he's been around forever. If anyone has been around for 5+ years, with frequent permagroups, rule bending, OOC tips, and "easy" race/class choices to help them along.... I should hope they can PK pretty well. A lot of the PKing elite are the DHs of Thera- sure, they have a specialty, and are occasionally forced to fumble through the other facets of the game because the management basically made them.... But they are never going to be a favorite to win the MVP. Because everyone knows the DH is only a DH.
