Hey there Helpless Baby,

Be a felar and perfect all of your skills. They don't learn that slowly at all... but unlike a Drow assassin you will not get your kicks at the earliest available level. It will be a definite struggle from the mid-teens to the mid-30s with perfecting your skills. To do the best, you might want to take some time out to practice. If you simply go off and rank alone, that helps also to keep you in pace.

Perfect strangle. (hide) and strangle those mace/axe spec warriors... they'll simply maul you. If you strangle them, be sure to get blindness dust and poison smoke off on them... it'll help. I usually start a fight with caltraps. When perfected they are very reliable and hit almost all of the time. The quick lowered dex from the caltraps will aid you in landing a successful kotegaeshi and kansetsuwaza. If I didn't start a fight with caltraps, I would start with a kotegaeshi... especially on a low dex opponent. Even though they may have +str gear, with a broken wrist they simply cannot dual wield a weapon.

If you want to tank well, staff/spear should be your focus... but sword/shield is good in certain situations also.

Um... Be a felar. :-) They're the best at Hero, in my opinion. Although, if this is your first assassin you may want to play a human and rank up quickly to get a taste of the skills. There is no substitute for a felar... Arials have lots of dex and learn quicker than Felar, sure... but if you just invest a little extra time practicing with your Felar, it's worth it.
