I'm partial to wood elves, maybe humans as well. I think arials are worse than wood-elves, whereas humans are just different. Humans: No vulns, quick ranking, average stats (although CHR 23?), average everything. Sturdier, but less finesse. Wood Elves: You can roll the maximum charisma of 22. 24 dex means you'll dodge like a crazy person, and bards get good parrying weapons and shield block if they want it. STR of 19 is fine- you aren't using your strength for much more than carrying gear. CON 17 and vuln_iron are a pain, but better than arials for a bard. (The previous poster forgets that arials are vuln_water and vuln-lightning... vuln_water is a big problem against invokers and conjurers.) INT 23 means quick practice and extra trains around for shoring up the low hp. Unlike arials, you can dive, which is getting handier and handier nowadays. Quiet movement is only occasionally useful, especially after you get sneak. Plus, wood-elves have a cooler home town. =) But I'm likely biased. =P > I've never played a bard. Arials dont have good charisma, but they are quik. Wood elves have 21 charisma, quick, but dont fly and are vuln iron. More iron out there than lightning. Human best. 22 charisma I think. no vulnerabilities. No extra penalty so you can beat on young lil ones in your pk range
