I strongly suggest the Elric novels by Michael Moorcock. If you can get your hands on the original Conan books by Robert E. Howard, grab them. Raymond Fiests Riftwar saga has its moments, skip his Serpentwar series. I suppose David Eddings has his merits, everyone seems to like him. His Belgariad, while childish and utterly predictable still can make a good read. If you like humor, I suggest giving Pratchett a try, his wit is quite often dry, but decent. That's it for now, off the top of my head.
