If you like assassins: Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos novels (Jhereg et al), which were one of the inspirations for neo-assassinate.

If you like elves: Michael Stackpole's "Once a Hero" is probably one of the better stand-alone fantasy novels I've read. I couldn't put my finger on why but I really enjoyed it.
