Spear/Staff is a fine newbie spec. You can get decent spears very, very easily, and it's not a spec that demands a spectacular weapon, as you are primarily defensive. Master your skills, and you're not easy to beat in a warrior on warrior fight. You may not always win, but you'll have ample time to get away.

The same goes for swords. Almost as effective as spears at taking blows, and with the added plus of good offense. Adequate swords are readily available.
