HPs for gear, and train everything you've got into hps.
Simply because, at the higher ranks, you can do a lot
of damage with sunray, the old bearform(damn I wish I
had that with Thalen), and your pets. So you need to
stick around as your damage gets dealt.

And the deal about "damage reduction not being on par
with a mage" - explore. They're lying just because they
never do. It's out there.
