In Reply to: Is there any possible way to play this game without being in some sort of icq or irc circle? Or having somekind of 'inside' knowledge on gameplay? I'm feeling the answer is no. no text posted by A Newbie Player Lost in the Dust on November 24, 2000 at 19:25:43:
The answer is a resounding 'yes.' I got good before there was a forum - you learn best through adversity. OOC relationships are crutches, plain and simple. You get away with less skill because you have buddies. That which you do know has been spoonfed, not learned. If you don't learn it, you don't know how to learn more. No one will admit it, but while the bar on 'average' is higher now, the movement from 'average' up to 'very good' and then to 'elite' is next to nill. Don't lose heart. Level slowly, try to lead your groups. Learn a few areas one at a time. If you die, look hard at what happened and try to figure out why. It's easier to learn to survive than it is to kill... one step at a time. If you come across something that strikes you as unbeatable... make that your next charecter. Do exactly as was done to you, and learn why it works... and when it doesn't work/watch how people beat you. Most of all remember that this is a game, and you're playing it to have fun. Find what is fun for you and do it. The more you play, and the more attention you pay the more fun you will have... and the better you'll become. Oh. And a good link doesn't hurt. Oh. Don't rely on clients or triggers. The most the elite use are a few function keys. As a warrior: "trip deadguy" "bash deadguy" "murder deadguy" RP101: Think up a backround for your charecter. Think up a personality. Use those two to rationalize beliefs on the various races, classes, cabals, alignments. When you play think like your charecter, and respond like your charecter. Don't ever step away from that. PK101: Learn what works best in what situation. As a thief do you want to kick a mage, or trip a mage? Well, if the mage can't do anything.. your superior damage, defense, and number of attacks will win. As an assassin do you want to trip a warrior or use special skills to maledict him? The warrior's superior damage, hp, attacks, weapons, and autoskills will kick your ass every time... what good is keeping them unable from getting a command in if they're beating your ass while you do it? Most important of all is learning from your mistakes. Figure out what went wrong, and don't do it next time. That (random race/random class) beating you every time with every charecter no matter what you try? Play one. See what beats you, and see how people manage to stop the tricks that you couldn't.
