Can’t go into too much detail here because of lack of time, but I’ve been in advertising for a little over three years and IMHO, getting a large number of people interested in CF would be a bit of a challenge. There isn’t a budget to spread the word wide, and the population as a whole isn’t actively looking for a text only, time intensive game. Hell, studies are showing a big attention dropoff with 60 second ads. You could try to target folks with advertising, but the only approach for a potential CF audience would be an internet campaign (as broad reach would be wayyy too cost prohibitive). The problem is that internet advertising isn’t too effective right now in its current format and is still not that cheap. The current operating budget of CF is under $7,000 right now so I think we can rule out advertising. The only solution is word of mouth. Imm staff, you may want to check out a book called “The Tipping Point.” It’s about how things become epidemics (socially or otherwise). It’s an easy, but interesting read and is a must-read if you’re looking at ways to grow the player base. CF right now is balanced. The player base stays the same, because the number of people leaving for good are balanced by new entries and multicharring Sylvans (just kidding, really I am). “The Tipping Point” talks about how to tip that balance so it can grow (hence the name). The people who are going to play this game are the types of people we interact with, so it would fall upon us to tip the balance by getting more people involved. Of course the question is whether or not CF wants or can support a much larger player base. This was a bit rambling, but read the book, it’s a good read in general but also makes sense fo CF.
