I enjoy Robert Jordan's writing. I don't believe he "rips off" Tolkein, either. In some ways, almost any author who writes in the fantasy genre is going to "rip off" Tolkein in some fashion simply because Tolkein was the first to come up with the sort of material he did. I am certain with a little digging you could find the stories that sparked Tolkein's imagination and prompted him to write his stories. Does this mean he stole material from someone else?

I know many people have a problem with the amount of detail RJ goes into in his books but I happen to like the amount of detail he uses. Anne Rice has a similar writing style, insofar as detail goes and I have enjoyed many of her books as well.

Of course, this is all opinion and will vary from person to person. I just happen to like reading and letting my imagination let me see what the author is talking about. In my case, the more detailed, the better.
