It doesn't really matter which you read first, there's no real contest. They're barely in the same category. Tolkien I would almost consider literature... Jordan is just another bucket of filth thrown into the running sewers of modern fantasy fiction.

The first Jordan book is pretty entertaining, but you'll notice it starts to seriously drag after that. If you get so you can't stand it, take a break out, cleanse your mind of his impurities, and start the Hobbit. It's a concise, complete masterpiece of fantasy. When you go back to reading Jordan, you'll have something to contrast it against.
