Editing of posts by VIPs.

While I don't mind that VIPs can and often do delete posts can we set up a rule to not allow editing of posts other than your own? Either delete the post or leave it be, I don't think its right to be able to selectively pluck out or alter tid bits at will.

Could just be me but I think if you're going to ruin the context of a statement you may as well delete the whole post rather than effectively changing the meaning behind what the person said. It worries me to think I can write something only to have someone else edit it in such a way that might, in effect, alter what I'm saying.

Just my 2 cents.

We, as moderators, often have reposted anonymous or otherwise sound posts for people who have made genuine slips that involved unacceptable rule-breaks. This is quite a chore for us but goes relatively unnoticed amongst the community.

There have also been times when we've looked at a post and thought, 'you know what, it's totally passable except for that one mention of a characters name' and have been forced to delete it over one word that could be removed without damaging the post.

As moderators, we see plenty of this. It's not in our nature to want to simply nuke everyones voice - we like chatter. It's a forum. And this editting stands as a tool for more polite, subtle and less head-achey (omg, forum nazi!!) moderating.

All of these posts seem to assume it would be applied liberally, bordering abuse. I'd like to think you're all trying desperately not to break the rules anyway and don't have a lot of reason to have the dreaded edit (or dredit as it might be known to cooler people) used on you. Rest assured, if you truly feel we do mangle a post you can always petition us to remove it entirely instead.

While there is arguably a benefit to the community in this instance, it does not change the fact that deleting of the post with an explanation allows the same thing to occur. It just puts the onus back on the original poster for re-editing but it allows ownership of what they posted to be theirs alone.

Its better to have policy that doesn't allow an abuse of power to begin with then to fight against it once it is in place. I am just stating my opinion towards having a third party edit my posts. If any VIP has edited any one elses post then someone has already edited that individuals ideas/views etc. Maybe you don't grasp what I am saying, but any change whether it is nefarious or not is changing what the original posters intended to post and that is what I feel is wrong about editing. If a post is in violation then just delete it and, if as a VIP you feel it is warranted, explain what was wrong so if the original poster cares to they could repost in a manner that does not break the rules. Do not presume to know what the original poster would want done with what they write, I know it is not something I am comfortable with.

As an aside, I find it important to note that the only people who have posted in support of VIP editing are VIP's themselves while a half dozen non-VIPS have already stated they would not like to have such censorship.

I understand that there are uses for it that would be nice from a moderators stand point that are not really objectionable to me as a forum poster, ie editing out the one rule breaking prep or name in a log or some such that was an obvious oversight by the original poster. It is not hard to contrive uses for such a tool that are innocuous and hard to argue against. But, to me editing in general is a lot more subjective, it in general allows moderators a lot more control over what actually shows up on the forum, and it is easy to see how it can be used to in a manner I would object to. To me if a post is actually beneficial AND breaks the rules, then it should be deleted, and followed with a short post saying something like: "ok to repost without x rule breaking mention in it". This has been done countless times before and allows the original poster, not a moderator the chance to rephrase or not repost as they see fit. The thing is the post represents the posters ideas, views, expereince etc, they should have the right over the content of the post.

When you forget to edit a name, or someone forgets to edit a prep?

When the new log board comes in, VIP's can go back into the log and edit those out. Preserving an entertaining post - but removing the violation that would prevent the rest of the community viewing it.

This is essentially how we'd use editing on the mainboard. The main mode of moderation is still deletion - I've made all of one edit on someone elses post, to remove a personal attack on a character that was 'slipped in' in some brackets - but some of the time we VIP's don't actually want to delete a post. For us, there is something in the post that we feel would be productive. This is a chance for us to preserve that, and avoid 'forum nazi accusations' where we blitz entire threads because of one tiny mention that rule-breaks.

And as the prime suspect in all forum nazi cases, I'd enjoy a little credit toward better moderation to balance the poo people throw the other way.

I understand that would be your intention, and the intetion of such a policy, that does not mean that is how it will be used in practice by everyone at all times. Personally, I do not want my forum handle attached to posts that are editted by someone else no matter what the intention.

Too many events have occured, and peopled died, over the type of censorship that is becoming here. Right, wrong, indifferent, do not alter my words, and have it stamped with my name, because you feel the need to shave it.

The written language is an art, a science, and an ultimate expression, if you're going to alter it, you need to simply remove the post. I don't see a middle ground on this aspect, and the poster can simply repost within appropriate context should he/she have broken a rule.

FWIW, if my posts start getting edited and then reposted with my handle stamp, I am going to stop using this website. I also would encourage everyone else to do so as well. At least on the officials it's go, or no go. They don't tamper with posts in that aspect, unless it's an entire post snip, and simply the Imm in question posting what/why they snipped the entire post.

I don't have much of an opinion on any of the VIPS positive or negative and I don;t think editting in general would be done with anything but the best intent in mind. That said I don't think it is a good policy for Dios to start editing out objectionable material. The deletion of posts that break the rules has been policy for a long time, people are familiar with that and comfortable with that. Editing to me would allow for the oppurtunity for the meaning behind posts to be changed from what the original poster intended without their consent, deletion doesn't change the meaning it just removes the message and is thus less objectionable to me.

The bolded part is censored by me, as the post was naming a character. Yhorian did not do any other editions. The VIP revisions show additions with green background and removed parts with red background. I have removed the removed parts from the editions shown here. As you can see, the only change by Yhorian is the *snip* to censor out a character's name. There is lame and there is moderation. That edit was moderation and the alternative for it was the deletion of the entire post. Is that what everyone prefers over snipping out the inappropriate parts like that, even when that small?
I know, and I wish

Most of you would found your own mud and not pollute this one. Nothing personal, but if you don't understand the English language well enough (a character's name *cough*) you shouldn't play a game that is completely built around it. Sometimes it's incredible how piss poor interactions are with some ESL players.

I give you as an example those two clouds that got tree smashed, not only was their Engrish shitty, their actions were. I would offer that mostly because they only knew enough to knowthe word DEAD! means they did something cool.
