They marked a security "to market" which has no consensus market value. In essence they set up a reserve. Whenever people set up a reserve you need to evaluate whether or not they're "over-estimating" to make their numbers look really good in the years following. In other words, they may have taken a calculated risk and figured it was better to take an excessive reserve now because stocks are bottomed anyway.
