For fun, I tried to use amazon ratings as a method of picking out good fantasy series. Some of these may have been culled from past "what fantasy book should I read next" posts here and on officials. The short list: <br> <br>"Kingdom of the Elves" series by Robert Stanek <br>Thomas Covenant books by Stephen R. Donaldson <br>Baroque Cycle by Neil Stephenson <br>Earthsea books by Ursula K. Le Guin <br>Coldfire Trilogy by C. S. Friedman <br> <br>Only one of those I've read any of is the Baroque Cycle. Read the first half of the first book, then got bogged down and never picked it up again. <br> <br>If you want to go "classic" there's always the Elric of Melibone books by Michael Moorcock, and the Amber Chronicles by Roger Zelazney. I read both of those series 15-20 years ago and enjoyed them.

Magician and Eragon are both good. (nt)

Eragon was engaging, but I wouldn't call it &quot;good&quot;. txt

Eh.

It's not surprising. The guy who wrote it is younger than most of us.

ExPaladin 738 November 03, 2007 09:27AM

I read the first half of the first one. Thought it was kinda floofy n/t

Lokain 747 November 03, 2007 10:15AM

It gets better, second and third books are much better

ExPaladin 797 November 03, 2007 12:27PM

A few suggestions

Treebeard 793 November 03, 2007 10:25AM

RR Martin's work annoyed me

Randomizer 740 November 03, 2007 10:35AM

If you were to insert Martin where you typed Jordan and vice versa

Lokain 727 November 03, 2007 01:06PM

Jordan and Martin in a nutshell [Possible Spoilers]

jegec 725 November 05, 2007 02:45PM

I know Martin is supposedly 7 books, but it reads like a trilogy right now IMO

Balrahd 759 November 06, 2007 09:38AM

I could see that

jegec 761 November 06, 2007 12:18PM

Now that you mention it, that's true for me, too.
