This game is similar to one I have played previously so I'll comment on the number crunchy aspects. NB: I haven't played with the Gaul/Teut/Roman aspect ie: Def/Att/Avg aspect so I won't comment on this. I'll just comment on how the troops work out.
Attack/Defense points are split into Cavalry attack, Infantry attack and Cavalry defense, Infantry defense. In general you will get better mileage per resource (I believe, and someone can test this through no. crunching) training infantry.
Initially Legionnaire can be used as an all purpose troop (attack/defense) until research/crop stores afford you more specialised troops.
Attack
When attacking initially there are two things to take into consideration. Attacking strength of troops and plunder capacity. You will want to attack with sufficient strength to strike an enemy and kill all their troops plus plunder as much as possible for future growth. Based on this:
Early Attack = Imperian/Legionnaire This combo will give you the best plunder/infantry attack capability.
Later Attack = Imperian/Equite Imperatoris/Legionnaire. Legionnaires are there to up plunder or fill out numbers to avoid your force being trapped if attacking Gauls. Eventually you might be sending waves to coincide so an initial strike force and then a plunder force to grab resources. These numbers are subject to change depending on the make up of the enemy defense (which by this point you should know anyway through scouting.)
Defense
When defending it is all about point for point how much defense you can get out of your troops for the resources spent. The ideal make up of defense is:
Praetorian/Legionnaire. Praetorian is a straight up defensive unit with high infantry defense and middling cavalry defense. Legionnaire will even out any chink in the defenses by enemy cavalry as it has the highest cavalry defense.
Cavalry
Equites Legati: Spying units. Very very useful to invest in early in order to tailor military force for attacking.
Equites Imperatoris: Good units for a quick plunder/daily subjugation or to take down a village with lopsided defenses (ie: high infantry defense but little cavalry defense invested.)
Equites Caesaris: Really probably the most useless and cost ineffective troop (Must be no. crunched to be verified.) This troop's utility probably lies in a boosting defensive force at short notice. Really has no application until you have more than one village in my opinion.
Hope that is useful. People are welcome to crunch the points/resources/build times to verify or update/correct my information.
PS: Dur since you have the skillz that killz, add/amend whatever you like.
