You've had that signature since I've been playing, and there has been lots that has gone on between now and then. Numbers could be higher, but that's true until we hit the login cap. People, myself included, are still having fun. To me, that's not dead. Perhaps you mean the CF that you remember, in the way that you remember it. That will be subjective to everyone here, and opinions will of course vary.
It's very much a "The game I loved is dead" as opposed to claiming that Carrion Fields is literally dead/gone. You're right there and I can't argue that it isn't subjective as to what Carrion Fields "should be."
The whole "full loot/sac everything!" is a sort of extreme response in answer to the complaints that have most often been fielded in last few months. At least, at the time I started doing that. Lately it's a ghost town. It's also a call to players to put in their own effort to "fix" the issues they complain about. Complaints about edges, not having something to do once they max gear/skills/whatever, lack of opponents, lack of interest, all sorts of things. Did you see how much drama stirred up every time Tac full looted/sacced someone? That's good for the game. A game that needs villains and something to be passionate about.
The idea is that not everyone will listen and obviously they didn't. The hope is a few will listen and be the villains. Someone everyone can hate on and make goals to kill/destroy. Whatever you like. As it stands, the status quo is bland and unchanging. People say the same things, do the same things, and mean the same thing. Vets are bitter and stuck in their dumb sportsmanship ways, unwilling to rock the boat for fear of reputation damage or hurting someone's feelings. That makes for a boring unexciting time imo. While it sure can make things easier on new people, it also makes it as boring as every other mud on the list. Better to lose 9 out of 10 new players that will contribute to more of the boring than it is to keep those 9 that will eventually quit anyway when they run into Sultan.
I don't really wish for the days of assured full loot/sac. I played for many years before I made any progress in the game because I didn't have OOC friends and it was nigh on impossible to accomplish anything without roaming gank squads obliterating you. That's not what we need and not what I want. The slow slide towards sportsmanship though degraded the culture and created a sense of entitlement that has people deleting or raging over a few pieces of gear. You may not do that and many may not, but it does happen and was another common event at the time the campaign started.
Take the reaction to Rahsael for instance. It's a new religion and imo has some very interesting avenues to approach it with. Not only that, but it sounds like the dude has put a ton of time into making the experience something special for anyone who tries. What do you get? Folks whining that the religion might be misconstrued as too mean. Truly boggles the mind.

and full loot/sac is simply that, a mechanic.
Agreed. People shouldn't be punished by immortals for utilizing it. That sort of behavior from the Umiron/Dest reign alone is enough cause to full loo/sac in revolt. The game belongs to the players and immortals alike.

You could say that weeds out the elites from the nubs, and it's true, but every elite was once a nub and the pool of elites grows ever smaller. Sportsmanship will keep the cycle going.
I don't want to weed out elites from nubs. I'm not that kinda guy. I'm terrible at this game. Sportsmanship will not keep any cycle going, except the cycle of slowly robbing Carrion Fields of an authenticity that was unique to Carrion Fields. As it moves forward, it becomes only a copy of other games that are softened to the point of impotency.
Your post is hard to answer point by point like I normally like to, so you got the rant. GLHF and welcome to CF.
Sportsmanship killed CF
