Outlander Noob

I've never played an Outlander and am looking at rolling one for my next character. However I had a few questions:

1. Which branch would you recommend for a noob? Good, neutral or evil?

I'm leaning towards evil for the additional opportunities to PK but if its overly challenging for a first timer I might avoid it.

2. As a newbie char, how strict is the no coin/civilization thing?

Do I need to give it all up from the second I roll? I worry my char will starve to death as I have no idea where to find food.

3. Any basic tips on the above?

Not looking to be spoon fed, but guides on areas to look for basic stuff like backpack and food would be helpful. Even a low level recall/teleportation if its not against the rules.

Any other tips would be appreciated too, thanks.

Thanks all. I was going to go Evil Mage but never even thought about the ranking aspect. (n/t)

Note: be wary of steaks on the ground. Remember orcs get butcher, and their steaks will poison others.
