Before you do something, ask yourself: From my character's perspective, why would he do this?
If you can come up with a rational answer to that question, it's fine. It isn't a "real-life" test, it's an "in-character" test. There's a difference.
Checking for equipment after a reboot? Your character knows that guy will get a replacement sword anyways, now's as good a time as any to check.
Using a river to escape a tracking mob? "I bet that guy can't swim, and I know he isn't smart like me to carry a kayak around everywhere he goes.. I bet I can get some distance by crossing this river".. (FYI, it isn't uncommon in real life to use terrain to escape from people.)
Chasing away a mob, so people can't find him? Maybe you can come up with a rational IC explanation that makes sense, but it I don't buy it.
As far as it being a dick move: If you ever do something purely for the sake of making the game less fun for other people, you're a dick. I know that doesn't mean much to you, since that's pretty much your primary motivator. But that's because you're a dick.
I'm not going to argue about it with you anymore because, we both know it won't accomplish anything. You continue being a dick, I'm going to continue trying to make the game fun for everyone involved.
