If your character had reason to feel an affinity with the cult, he could have rp'd looking to deal with the addiction.

Or he could have rp'd an addiction that he concealed.

Or his reason for wanted to be a scarab could be to learn how to cure himself with the tower of iron will, if hiding it.

The risk is that scarab might decide the character would not be able to use the tower of iron will power at all, because of the addiction. Which would be valid and a risk you take.
