True, a lot of people won't wait long after you ambush, so why always use it as an opening move?
Because the majority of your enemies will neutralize your ambush immediately after you attack, unless you do so much damage so quickly they get freaked out and flee instead of neutralizing it. If you open with vengeance, you will not get the opportunity to ambush the majority of the time.
I don't know. I definitely think animists look like a lot of fun to play and they are probably clever and subtle like shamans, but I'm not convinced they're the "deadliest" rangers. I fought lots of rangers and druids with my last character, an assassin, and I did not find surviving wasps + vengeance + insect swarm to be so very difficult. Yes, I hated primordial vengeance, but 9/10 times it was the ranger/druid fleeing the area rather than me - which left me to deal with the maledictions at my leisure. Long fights just do not benefit rangers very much.
But seriously, they look like fun, so why don't you roll one up and rack up the PKs?
