This would be true if there weren't such high levels of douchebags in game. But there certainly are. That's exacerbated by the fact that jerks in game can find a variety of ways to grief you, either with multikilling, full sacrificing or full looting, or just shit talking endlessly and being "sore winners/losers".

I think it boils down to the types of people who enjoy this game. CF has three target audiences:

1) High challenge/puzzle oriented exploration types
2) Competitive Player Killers
3) Roleplayers

A large percentage of the playerbase is #2, myself included, which leads to some pretty crappy behavior. Consider people who cheat at CS and games like that - basically there are people out there who have no integrity or character and summarily just want to win and be pricks about it. That's not even going into the fact that many mud players who books the largest amount of hours don't have normal lives or healthy mental states (if they did, how would they play 40+ hours per week?).

Bit of a cynical response but I'd say if you can't stand dealing with jerks CF isn't the game for you.
