There is no 'cap' or 'limit' on how many edge points you can earn. Nor on how many edges you can pick.
There is however 'diminishing returns' on all methods of gaining edge points. This means the more you earn via PK, Exploration, etc. The more effort you have to put into that area to gain more. It's unclear if this is true for Imm exp, which might be an exception or might not.
You can easily expect to afford (assuming lvl 51, minimal roleplay, 200 hours and an average pk record) at least 3 expensive edges, and maybe 2-3 cheap ones. If you excel in any one area, you can easily expect to have 8-12 edges at hero depending on spending. If there is one particular expensive edge you want - picking 2-3 minor ones will NOT affect you in the long run. It will, however, delay you getting that expensive edge.
Once you break about 10 edges, saving up will become harder and harder. I find myself blowing it on cheap ones out of impatience but this is not something to worry about to begin with. Spend them freely on your first 4 edges, then save up as you near hero for that one special one you desire. I'll have to give a disclaimer: Mileage May Vary.
If you want my advice - Use the 'anti-bard' edges as a bar. If you see mousy, cheerful, etc. then anything above is a more 'expensive' edge. If you don't even see those edges yet (and be careful, they only appear after lvl 30 or so) then you're in 'cheap edge' territory. The Wiki sometimes gives you a guestimate of cost but all edges are listed in descending cost when you discuss - meaning the ones at the bottom, are cheap as chips and can be bought without worry/care.
Enjoy.
