You could have went along with this quite easily. You see your destruction cleared the way for new growth and of course from new growth new forests could arise. Also do some research, many plants and several types of trees, jack pines for instance, require that their seeds be burned before they can germinate. It is slightly moronic to think that trees are the only form of vegetation approved by the Ancients though and some Imm must have had a branch bent sideways... but I digress....
There are ways to roll with whatever the Imms throw at you and still keep the core of what your believe your character should be. Being of the Refuge means being a conduit for forces that work to return to the age where Nature dominates hence the strong manhandling the weak. You had the latter but needed to simply tweak your apporach to also encompass the former. Would not have been that hard and might have been very rewarding.
If you felt curious as to WHY they were giving you the entire TREE biz you should have sent off an email and asked them how and why they saw such a need for it to be incorporated into your roleplaying. Remember that in CF, just like when you play table top rpgs, you have to roll with whatever the Imms/GMs throw at you. Sure you want X to be true but it just may be in this world/locale it is X+1. The one in this case being the Tree. I have found that most Imms are more than willing to roll with what you have if you show some effort to see where they are coming from as well.
