Sooner or later any imperial who breaks law of purpose will have to pay for that. Except you delete before it happens. Just for you to know, it might be other punishment than anathema. FYI you rarely get anathemed for breaking laws, usualy you get demotion.

Sooner or later could mean at least "half a month" in Beront's case. And longer in many other cases. Playing a lich may have skewed your perceptions, but a month is an eternity in the "CF cycle." If punishment doesnt happen for 16 days, people are effectively getting away with it.

Like I said, the vast majority of imperials don't break imperial law. But there are a few bad applies like Beront, who are playing Sect Leaders, who break imperial law knowing their friends will re-promote them if they get demoted.

As for demotion being punishment, I think it is an extremely ineffective punishment. Take a look at dervish's last imperial bard, who was demoted a bunch of times. And you'll see that for 2/3 of those demotions, he was quickly repromoted by his (and your) friend, alex. If it's not Anathema, it's not punishment, especially when we're talking about a cabal known for ooc cliques like empire.

Anyway. I agree with you that relatively few imperials break the law. But I disagree that the anathema punishment system is fool proof for the ones that do because the anathema system requires aggressive, active immortal oversight - players just aren't willing to do it. But in your case, Ahtieli probably draws so much IMM attention that there's no way you could get away with it :P
