Conjie pets don't get ordered. Their behavior is based on how "happy" they are.
Happiness is based on your charisma, how close your alignment matches with theirs, and a variety of other factors.
For an OG conjie it's extremely easy to keep an Archon happy. An elemental is a bit harder to keep on your side, but still not too bad.
The happier they are the more likely they will be to do what you presumably want them to do (heal you, kill what you're fighting, not kill you.)

Now, you can't order your pets, but you have control over your familiar, which can be super cool.

Empowerment is one part luck, one part how much you put into it and one part being smart.
If your RP is exploration and you're going to be uncaballed, your choice of IMM is not as important as it would be for an RP heavy character.
Look around and see who is empowering/tattooing a lot and jump on that bandwagon (Whysidan, Rayihn right now it looks like.)
