For ranking before archons, use all of the options available to you. When you are healthy, you attack first, when you aren't, have the familiar. It heals fast so when it is too hurt, let it rest while you kill something else or rest as well.

Angels shouldn't be turning on you. Check your charisma. If you want, PM me a log of when one turns on you and I'll pm you back with everything I see happening.
