Thief is taking your most likely means of escape, paladin is preventing you from retrieving. This seems like solid tactics on their part. If the thief continued robbing you and going for offhand weapons or extra gear like that bracer, I can see a minor annoyance. Unless I've missed something this seems like them setting up to seal the kill on you. Paladin wrathing to curse you, thief planning to blind you after he gets your potions.
