If you look at the AP skill list, it's impressive. They have poison, plague, a bleeding skill, a skill to add movement lag, SLEEP, energy drain, third attack, bash, one round high damage affect-all spells, SLEEP, trip, enhanced damage, dual wield, summon, SLEEP, parry, shield block, scrolls, wands, and the ability to stop mages from using spells and priests from using communes. Also, they can cast SLEEP. There is no scissor that the AP doesn't have a rock to crush.

I get it. They don't get spellcraft, and so it's harder to land their spells. And the defining skill is unholy blessing, and dieing just once can lose a hundred hours work and cause a person's rage-o-meter to go past 9000.

I think people get hung up on unholy blessing. It can make an AP into a demigod, sure, but the lack of it doesn't make an AP weak.

If more people played AP's without a focus on unholy blessing I think they'd get more out of the class. There's no other class I can think of that has the tools to, with a slight bit of luck, take down anyone.
