I'll preface to say that I'm not claiming to be innocent, it just clearly doesn't matter.

They might be old proverbs and classic crutches but they're not great philosophy by any means:

there's nothing wise about shrugging off criticisms because a proverb has gifted you the assumption that the critic is also guilty. That's just a very long tradition of trolling.
