It's possible the thief was on a while without you noticing. Maybe one or both of them logged on for the experience bonus, or to kill people logging on for the experience bonus.

Kills like this happen often without any OOC communication. I doubt anyone is trying to get you to delete.

That's a bummer. Small tip: rest instead of fully waking, that way he can't bash/trip you with his first action.
