Before a Strangely Illuminated Pillar 
  Chill winds cease as you approach the large pillar planted here at the
heart of the village. The ground here is solid rock, yet it seems to absorb
your footsteps as you approach the obelisk that reaches up, up, almost
endlessly up into the dark night sky. To the north, the faint outline of
trees can be seen through the gloom, while to the south a small path leads
toward a lighted hut. Dark patches of earth stretch west, leading toward a
darkened clearing, and a thin path winds through the darkened huts to the
east. It is difficult not to feel a presence emanating from this marker as
you look upwards at the names of those who died in the war against magic.

     A towering pillar of stone is erected here, illuminated by the moon.

A Trail Amidst the Trees 
  The fading light bears forth shadows that come from the rising trees
sprouting along this path. The vegetation seems alive as small bushes and
wild plants reach toward you in the darkness. The branches of the trees
spiral toward the sky, crabbing their twisted fingers along the moonlit
clouds. The distinct sounds of wildlife can be heard in the darkness ahead,
as can the croaking of frogs and the slight trickling of a stream. The
trees get closer together as the trail continues, branching down the hill
to the east and continuing towards a thatched hut built in a dark clearing
to the north. To the south, the plants thin out and the moon shines on a
dirt path.

The War Room 
  This spacious hut is dominated by a large rectangular table that lies in the
exact center, surrounded by well-worn chairs of rough carved wood. Gently
swaying lanterns hang from iron hooks driven into the supporting beams of
the roof, flooding the table with bright light while leaving the corners in
shadows. A giant tapestry depicts combat forms and hangs upon the eastern
wall while a blood-red curtain rests along the western wall depicting an
ancient battle.  Almost hidden in the shadows of the southeast corner is a
large book resting open upon a stand, and a large sheet of parchment lies
sprawled atop a short table to the southwest.

The Commandments of the Village sit on the center of the table, set in stone.

  The dark skies glitter with distant stars as the light of the moon gives
this square an auburn hue. You can barely see the cracked ground, marked
by what appears to be blood. The depth of the darkness increases further
north, while to the west a soft light comes from a secluded hut. From the
south drifts plumes of smoke, rising into the dark night skies. The main
path of the village continues east, leading toward a number of torch-lit
huts. The square is all but deserted, and the absence of barbarians and
their young leaves this square seeming ghostly. There is no sound but the
whisper of the wind to bring you company.

  The circle of rites is quiet in the night, and the scattered blades of
grass that have managed to avoid being trampled sway in an unseen breeze.
No grass grows on the circle itself, of course; it is kept in immaculate
condition by young barbarians learning the value of discipline and respect
for the ways of the village. Great torches have been plunged into the
ground beside the logs where spectators sit, ready to be used should a
challenge be made that cannot wait until daybreak to be resolved. At this
instant, however, the circle stands empty and its blood-soaked soil is
hidden under cover of the night, revealing nothing of the mighty blows
that have been struck within and telling no tales of the tests of
strength, wit, and agility that it has seen.

Blood Square 
  The soft warmth of the sun fills this bloodied and ancient square. The
earth is cracked and the ground is stained, yet this was once the heart
of the village and is marked as such by the blood that reddens the earth.
Barbarian children hardly notice your presence as they wrestle and run in
the square, so intent are they on their war-games and fun. Sparse weeds
grow along the northern edge of this square, becoming denser as you
approach the building that lies in that direction. To the south is a hut
from which plumes of smoke and ash drift into the deep blue skies. To the
west is another hut, secluded from the more traversed portions of this
village and draped with the furs of exotic animals. The path continues
east, leading toward one of the clusters of huts that make up the bulk of
the village.

The Circle of Rites 
  This field has obviously seen much use; trails lead all over and the grass
has been trampled by the passage of many feet. To the far side a patch of
ground has been picked bare of stones and plants, forming a perfectly
clean and level area of dirt. Logs and stumps ring this earthen arena,
perfectly placed for spectators. This is the circle of rites -- a place
where one villager may challenge another to prove who is the better
warrior. It is a place where competitions are held and leadership is
decided, where one may display prowess to all the village. It is a place
of skill and finesse, but also of rage and fury, for often these fights
cause tempers to flare and blood to boil. It is a place where the winner
is carried away on shoulders, and the loser dragged away in the dirt. Most
of all, though, it is a place of battle.

     The sand here is slightly discolored, having recently absorbed some fresh blood.
     (Glowing) A ring of unlit torches lines this arena.
     The beaten corpse of a mage swings here from an erected wooden log.

An Enormous, Skull-covered Hut 
  The silence in this hut is unfamiliar compared to the rest of the village.
great stone walls are erected in respect for the slain, great stone
behemoths lined with relics of weapons and armors that once adorned proud
men who defended this once barbaric village.  Great beams of white oak
hold the vaulted roof together, casting shadows down upon this great
building filled with heritage.  The condition of the hut is immaculate,
such that even the slightest bit of bloodshed would stand out like a
crimson beacon.  Great wooden logs serve as a fireplace, with pelts of
winter wolves and arctic bears spread across a great wooden floor.
Along the walls are great shelves, cases of books and maps that serve
as navigational tools for these great warriors.  A set of great swinging
doors leads out of this hut, to the north, while to the south another
set of doors leads through a back entrance, away from this ominous hut.

  Here lay the outskirts of the citadel of Ostalagiah.  Broken ramparts run
along the ends of the city walls, forming an impenetrable barrier of stone.
Ruined flags regarding the once superiority of the city of giants, hang in
defeat as a cold breeze stirs around the ramparts.  Small patches of grass
attempt to grow from the cold earth, seeking any form of sunlight that might
breach the dark clouds that loom over these walls.  You remain close enough
to the walls that you can smell the stench that fills the streets within.

  A large mound of earth has been pushed up here, forming a strategically
planned barrier to the village just beyond. Behind the earthen barricade
stand the gates -- heavy, massive, fortified iron gates that require much
muscle-power to move -- and beyond them you can see the faces of numerous
huts, most looking as rugged as the hills before you. In the distance,
people move about within the secluded village, and smoke drifts up from
various campfires and cookstoves. The gruff sound of barbaric voices drifts
to you on the wind, as does the occasional burst of laughter and clang of
metal.

The Breaching of the Walls of the Ostalagiah Ruins 
  You climb atop the pile of rubble and ash which once stood as the
western wall of Ostalagiah.  It served its purpose well, but not well 
enough.  It now stands in ruins, smoldering remains of what was once a
mighty city.  After many years of war the united fronts finally destroyed
the wall, through which a flood of dwarven, elven and human soldiers came. 
After freeing the slaves, ransacking the city and turning the walls to
rubble, the united front turned around and headed back to their respective
homelands to the north.  While that ancient war is over, the sight of 
distant burning fires and a village settled to the west of here gives one
reason to believe that it is not the only war that occurs throughout these
ruined buildings.

The Breaching of the Walls of the Ostalagiah Ruins 
  You climb atop the pile of rubble and ash which once stood as the
western wall of Ostalagiah.  It served its purpose well, but not well 
enough.  It now stands in ruins, smoldering remains of what was once a
mighty city.  After many years of war the united fronts finally destroyed
the wall, through which a flood of dwarven, elven and human soldiers came. 
After freeing the slaves, ransacking the city and turning the walls to
rubble, the united front turned around and headed back to their respective
homelands to the north.  While that ancient war is over, the sight of 
distant burning fires and a village settled to the west of here gives one
reason to believe that it is not the only war that occurs throughout these
ruined buildings.
