Is it that hard to understand why someone would feel bad for doing something dumb? Like, maybe it didn't occur to him that Hiajist would cry to him, so he forgot to tell Hiajist not to. There were consequences, and he feels bad about them. It seems unlikely that it was sketchy, else they would have tried to benefit from it by looting Kostyan.
