Far Above the Oryx Steppes

  The wind rushes around you, swirling and blowing wildly. It grows 

perceptibly cooler here as you circle high above the steppe land below.

Tall  grasses cover the majority of the land and snake-like paths meander

across  much of it. Small clusters of nomads scramble around below as

massive  derelict buildings decay away around them. To the west you spy

what appears  to be a gulch or riverbed of some kind, while back to the

north lies the red  sands of the Araile.

  The air rushing under your wings here is very warm, with a slight

smell of salt indicating the proximity of the ocean to the east. 

You slow the flapping of your wings and glide on the thermals 

rising from the desert below for a moment, to marvel once again 

at the view.  No matter how many times you see it, the view from 

above the clouds still invokes a childlike reverence in you.  The 

cloud cover here is sparse, giving you a wide view of the desert,

from the edges of the Sands of Sorrow to the west, to the river 

Khalid bordering the city of Hamsah Mu'tazz to the north, to the thin

line of mountains that separate the desert from the Dragon Sea to 

the east.  In the center of the desert, you can make out a thin 

line through the shifting sands that leads south from Hamsah Mu'tazz 

to a cluster of tents beside a small block of red stone.  Off to 

the eastern side of the desert near the mountains, another line 

leads off to join with the main one.

desert, and splits it. A deep gray line thrusts into the chaos of the

amazed at how little damage there is to it. Who built the road and

why it has been lost in time and buried by the sands, you don't know.

dark gray stones worn smooth from use start your journey into the

desert. To the north you see the gates of Hamsah Mu'tazz, and to the south

the vast expanse of rolling dunes, and swirling sands...and a long

stretch of dark gray stones cutting down the middle.

Above the Seaport of Hamsah Mu'tazz

  East of Hamsah Mu'tazz, on the western edge of the Dragon Sea, you can

see the Seaport of Hamsah Mu'tazz beneath you.  Several ships dot the waters

of the sea, coming and going, trading and marauding.  The long, wood piers

of the seaport stretch out into the water, swarming with people working,

trading, stealing and partying.  You can see a large canopied area on the

north end of the Seaport, and several smaller piers encased in a canopied

framework.  A lighthouse tower has been built on an island north of the

seaport, guiding ships safely in and out of port, though from the way it is

built, it seems as though it would be impossible to fly to.

  Here at the heart of the city the din of the crowds mingles with barkers

and traders and drunken sailors on shore leave.  A large fountain spreads

across the square in a shape of a six pointed star and many people sit along

the raised stone edge above the cool waters engaged in conversation.  

Wandering among the merchants, jugglers, snake charmers, prostitutes and

clergymen you find your hands clasped tightly around your purse for fear of

being overwhelmed by the confusion and robbed blind.  Outside the tents and

tables that are scattered through the throng a ring of shops encloses the

square.

The Forge

  At the north end of this high-roofed structure sits a fire pit surrounded

by a low stone barrier.  A stack of lumber sits to one side of the forge,

buckets of water in front of that.  Hammers, cutters, clamps and punchers

hang from nails along the workbench at the back of the shop where several

works in progress sit unattended to.  Iron lattice work decorates the door

of the shop in a bold, simple, yet elegant pattern.  The glassless windows

of the shop remain open at all times, allowing whatever breeze that lingers

outside to pay a visit in this oven of a workplace.

out in mandala patterns across the threshold extends for twenty paces into 

the city into Yasir Row to the south.  West of here lies the building of the

blacksmith.  To the east lies a street bordered by beautiful gardens.
