I think it's about an even fight in the wilds, where they can use all their class abilities and you can use all yours. Whereas rangers in civilized areas are severely crippled. Essentially, they're an unholy-less AP that can't cast, trip, cleave, or bash. Ouch.
Because I've spent ~2k hours playing rangers over the last few years, I am extremely sympathetic with their tedious predicament, and I make it a point to fight rangers in the wild whenever possible. However, in this log, Mizze walks into a woodland where he KNOWS a ranger is likely waiting for him, and does not use any protections, at all. I would never, ever do this. If I'm 70% sure an enemy ranger is online, I wouldn't step into a heavily trafficked wilderness spot without some decent DR - let alone stepping into the wilderness area outside the enemy ranger's cabal.
The times I've gotten whacked by this kind of stuff is when I'm not aware the ranger is an enemy. For example, I was playing a goodie fortress assassin who was constantly getting attacked by various neutral outlander rangers without warning - or after those rangers asked to be friends first. That kind of thing is hard to prepare for.
